Take some time out for yourself. You deserve it.
New Zealand or England. Where will you go first?
Mac Du Rose enters the world in the most traumatic way possible. Like his sister before him, he’s early, his mother is alone and he’s born at the top of the Du Roses’ mountain in the north island of New Zealand. Phoenix opens her eyes to the stars overhead, but her newborn brother draws his first breath to the sight of a gun aimed at his tiny face.
Mac’s early life is dogged by the tragedy of his first hours and his ominous silence tortures his mother. She blames herself for the condition which seems to hamstring her small son. After all, she fired a shotgun right next to him in his first half an hour of life.
It’s probably easier to talk about who he isn’t, first.
He’s not the delicate wallflower Hana thinks he is. Unable to react to sound or communicate with words doesn’t mean he’s unaware of what’s going on around him. It’s a grave mistake to believe he doesn’t have an opinion of his own. Mac’s relationship with his mother is very different to the one he enjoys with Logan. His father accepts him for who he is and doesn’t suffer from Hana’s need to fix everything. Phoenix and Wiri just accommodate Mac’s disability as though it’s the most natural thing in the world. Mac has a hidden backbone, but what will it take for him to show it? We get to see a little of his inner depths during his unflappable assessments during Du Rose Vendetta.
One of my daughters was the youngest child her surgeon had ever treated when he operated on her in 1997 at the age of 2. Recounting Mac’s limitations and difficulties took me back to those early days of signing and mouthing words as clearly as possible. Raising a child with hearing difficulties isn’t easy. They struggle to connect with others in their silent world, their speech sounds odd and they spend their lives playing catch up. We were fortunate and after a couple of operations, she was able to hear. That’s not everyone’s story. It might not be Mac’s.
For those who love Logan Du Rose, it would be impossible to imagine any son of his not possessing the qualities which make him such a force to be reckoned with. Don’t be fooled by Mac. Beneath his steadfast nature and silent study of the world around him is a sharp, astute mind. He watches everything and misses nothing. I can’t wait to show you more of him.
Yes, there will be a novel dedicated just to him. I’m in the process of finishing up Phoenix Du Rose right now and Wiremu Du Rose will follow that. Time has moved on a decade when we drop in on Phoenix and her brother and cousin. Are you curious about how much will have changed?
Mac is Hana’s little double and with his green eyes and red hair, he will always stand out from the crowd of dark haired Maori offspring. But he’s more like his formidable father than anyone could have guessed. Logan is building a legacy for his children which means they’ll never experience the poverty of his early years, but the big question is this: will they actually want it?

Here are some reviews to help you decide;
“My favorite scene involved Hana dealing with kids, which is more nerve wracking than a gang of muggers, especially when they commit unspeakable acts of ribald humor in church, and guess who was supposed to be in charge of this wayward band?” Sharon
“I was completely absorbed from start to finish.” Elizabeth
“Excellent Book. Really enjoyed it. Characters and emotions really come to life.”
